Gilbert Officer Seriously Injured In Scottsdale Hit-And-Run Crash

SCOTTSDALE, AZ — A Gilbert police officer is in critical condition following a hit-and-run crash that occurred early Sunday morning in Scottsdale. According to the Gilbert Police Department, a drunk driver is to blame. Around 1:23 a.m., the Arizona Department of Public Safety notified the Gilbert Police Department that GPD Sgt. Tom Edgerton had been injured in a collision on the southbound 101 freeway in north Scottsdale. He was off duty and riding his privately-owned motorcycle at the time of the crash, his department said. According to a preliminary investigation, Edgerton was rear-ended by a vehicle that fled the scene of the collision. The Scottsdale Police Department later located the suspect's vehicle and arrested the driver for DUI and leaving the scene of a collision. Sgt. Edgerton sustained serious injuries and an initial examination has him in critical, but stable condition at this time, police said. "Please keep Sergeant Edgerton and his family in your thoughts. We will provide an update when appropriate, thank you," his department said on its official Facebook page. The suspect's name has not been released but the Arizona Department told AZFamily.com that he is a 23-year-old man from Oceanside, California.
