Description

Tried curling already? Maybe even played a few games, but you've been away from the game and want to shake off the rust? This is for you! Come and curl again at "Beyond Learn to Curl!" If you want to throw some more stones and play a few more ends while waiting to join a league, this is a great way to get a refresher! In this 2 1/2-hour session, our volunteer instructors will refresh and build your curling skills, helping to improve your delivery, sweeping, basic strategy, and explain a bit more about all the "other stuff" - where to stand, how to keep the game flowing, and such. And of course, you get to play with more curlers! FAQs Do I need to be a member of the club to participate in "Beyond Learn to Curl?" No! However, you DO get special pricing if you're a member, so if you're thinking of joining the club for the upcoming season, this is a great time to do it! What will we be doing at this event? This is mostly the same as Learn to Curl, but we'll skip past some of the on-ice material that you've already learned, so that you get more repetitions and some more gameplay. What if I bring other people who haven't curled yet? If you want to curl on the same sheet with them, and if space is available, please go to the "LEARN TO CURL" event for the same night, enter the promo code "BEYOND," and use either: "LICC MEMBER - Beyond Learn to Curl" for yourself as a member;"Learn to Curl" for guest(s) who have NOT curled yet;"NON-MEMBER - Beyond Learn to Curl" for guests who have been on the ice before, and are coming back for more. Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event? There's no minimum age, but age 12 and up is generally best. You must be able to get enough "push" to slide a 42-pound granite stone on ice. Some of our curlers have been younger. We've had league players as young as 11, and we've had event participants slightly younger than that. Can people come watch? YES, spectators are welcome! However, for now, given the capacity restrictions at the rink, spectators are extremely limited for Learn to Curl. If you would like to bring anyone, please let us know in advance so we can confirm whether there's enough space to do so. What should I wear? Same as for Learn to Curl! You will be on the ice for 2 hours, so dress appropriately: Under current rules, a mask remains required.Wear warm, comfortable clothing that allows you to lunge.Dressing in layers is a good option, as you will start out cold and have periods of time when you will sweat (good sweeping warms you right up).Thin gloves may be helpful - sometimes the brooms get cold.Consider wearing a tucked-in shirt. If your bottoms have belt loops, it may be a good idea to use a belt (see above about lunging and connect the dots!).Make sure your footwear is thick, flat, gripping sneaker-type shoes – no boots or uneven soles (these will have virtually no grip!), or very thin soles (you'll get very cold!). It should be as flat as possible - nothing with a heel.Do not wear scarves or clothes that may drag on the ice.You may want to bring a knee pad, such as those for volleyball. If there is protective equipment that you choose to bring, you are welcome to do so. Some of our curlers choose to wear helmets, for example. What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event? There is free parking on-site. Long Island Rail Road service is also nearby, though you will need to take a cab or make other arrangements. If you have transportation concerns, let us know and we'll do our best to provide suggestions. How can I contact the organizer with any questions? Leave a voicemail at 516-900-CURL (2875), or email [email protected]. Email gets a faster response, the phone number is mostly voicemail-only! We are an all-volunteer organization. COVID-19 UPDATESAs conditions improve during the COVID-19 pandemic, we will continue to update and evaluate our guidance, while also aligning with guidance from the Long Island Sports Hub facility and other relevant authorities. As of June 21, 2021, we have the following. This may change as the event gets closer: The rink capacity has been restored to permit a full class of 32 curlers, trained by 8 LICC volunteer instructors. Please let us know in advance if you have any spectators. Space is still currently limited, so we need to make sure we have space for everyone.Masks are required. Established in 2008, the Long Island Curling Club is dedicated to the lifetime/inter-generational sport of curling.
