Description

The year is 1937. After performing a sold-out concert, renowned singer Marian Anderson was refused a room at a whites-only Nassau Inn. We are thrilled to celebrate the creation of the Sarasota-Manatee Committee of the Minnis Bar Association with a very special presentation of My Lord, What A Night at the esteemed Florida Studio Theatre on August 6th, 2021, at 7:30 P.M. This new work from award-winning playwright Deborah Brevoort centers on a startling but true moment in history. In 1937, famed international vocalist Marian Anderson just finished her performance at Princeton’s McCarter Theatre, garnering accolades from critics and the public alike. Following the sold-out concert, Anderson heads to the Nassau Inn for an evening’s rest, only to be denied lodging for one undeniable reason: her skin color. Surprisingly, another iconic historical figure comes to the famed singer’s rescue: the one-and-only Albert Einstein, a great admirer of her work. What follows is an insightful glimpse into the real-life struggles faced by two 20th century icons and their unlikely friendship. After the play, the Honorable Judge Charles Williams will lead a stimulating conversation with the actors. We kindly ask that you purchase a ticket for yourself, a colleague, or a student. Tickets begin at $45.00, and a Gold Sponsorship is available for $100.00. All monies raised will go toward the Minnis Bar Association’s scholarship program. Fred G.
