Description

HGGHH Youth Cooking Program with Chef Sierra Torres Chef Sierra Torres is a "bayou girl" raised in the Crescent City. If growing up in the swamps of the Mississippi Delta can teach you anything, it's how to love your family, the food that brings you together, and the farmers, fishers, and animals who made it all possible. After completing four years of Culinary Arts training at NOCCA and working in fine dining restaurants around the city, Sierra moved up to Massachusetts to receive a B.S. in Sustainable Food and Farming. Not only was it important for her to cook the rich and flavorful food of her culture, but to understand the implications of where that food was coming from and how it was being produced. Now Sierra runs Cattail Cooks, a small catering company and food story-telling project that seeks to tell a story about the food we are eating, the people who are growing and harvesting that food, and the history and place that has made it all possible. Using her love for agriculture and cooking, Sierra hopes to teach and inspire the next generation of New Orleans' Chefs and Farmers. *Partial funding provided by Jazz & Heritage After-School and Summer Education Programs in Music, Arts and Cultural Traditions. This category supports after-school and summer educational arts programs offered by nonprofit organizations and Louisiana K-12 schools. Hermann-Grima + Gallier Historic Houses, managed by The Woman’s Exchange, preserves two 19th-century French Quarter homes and, through their architecture, collections, and history, inspires discourse about our collective past and its relevance to our present and future. Visitors, students, and researchers explore such diverse topics as the lives of the houses’ owners and enslaved people, free people of color, open-hearth cooking, mourning rituals, and the entrepreneurial pursuits of women.
