Experience a chamber music concert of world premieres and new pieces inspired by the racial justice and the Black Lives Matter movements.
We are honored to present a performance of new works centered on themes of racial justice and cultural healing. This concert features three world premieres from composers in various stages of their careers and lives, focusing on the struggle to establish one's identity and find a sense of unity in spite of systemic racism, structural inequities, and pervasive racial divisions.
Micah Ballard: Let America be America Again
Meilina Tsui: Ay-Ay, Bopem (A Kazhak Lullaby Without Words)
Shawn Okpebholo: there is always light
This event will also feature new works, including:
Steph Davis: "I go to prepare a place for you." - Harriet Tubman (2020-21)
Dorothy Chang: Reflection (2019; US premiere)
Performers include guest artist Britton-Rene Collins, Erin Fung, Caterina Longhi, Charles Morey, Christopher Sales, Denielle Wilson, and the CSYO Nouveau Fellows' Queen City String Quartet.
This concert has been generously sponsored by an ArtsWave Truth and Reconciliation grant, the Canada Council for the Arts, and Marimba One.
