The Utah Division of Indian Affairs celebrates the 15th anniversary of the Governor’s Native American Summit, August 6, 2021, at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. This year’s theme is Engaging Communities: Strength and Resilience by Working Together. This year's theme focuses on the resilience and strength of our communities working together for the greater good during the past year. Keynote Speakers:Supaman:As a member of the “Apsaalooke Nation”, Supaman makes his home on the Crow reservation in Montana. “Supaman” is Christian Takes The Gun, a Native American dancer and innovative hip hop artist who has dedicated his life to empowering and spreading a message of hope, pride and resilience through his original art form. He has been the recipient of the 2017 MTV VMA award for “Best Fight Against the System”! He is also a Nammy “Native American Music Award” winner, “North American Indigenous Image Award winner, and 7 “Tunney Award winner. He was awarded The Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Award in Canada for best video and was voted MTV’s new Artist of the Week! His 2018 nominations brought him home awards for Best Hip Hop Album and Best Producer for the Indigenous Music Awards. His videos titled “Prayer Loop Song” and “Why” both have gone viral and have received millions of views on youtube and Facebook which has put him in high demand, touring extensively throughout the U.S.A and internationally. Supaman’s one-of-a-kind presentation combines Native culture, comedy and urban hip hop culture which dazzles audiences and captivates listeners. For this he has gained the respect of his community and generation. The communicative talent along with the compassion that exudes from his music allows him to connect with people from all walks of life. His uncanny ability to motivate, encourage, and inspire through dance, and hip hop music keeps him at the forefront among his contemporaries which gives him a platform to educate on Indigenous issues. Governor Spencer J. Cox:A sixth-generation Utahn, Gov. Spencer J. Cox was born and raised in Fairview, a town of 1,247 residents located about two hours south of Salt Lake City. He graduated from Snow College, Utah State University and Washington and Lee University School of Law. Cox met Abby Palmer at age 16 and they have been smitten with each other ever since. After Spencer’s service as a missionary in Mexico, the couple married and moved away to continue their education. Gov. Cox launched his career as an attorney clerking for U.S. District Judge Ted Stewart and began building a successful law practice at a Salt Lake City firm, Fabian & Clendenin. He returned to Fairview to join the family business, CentraCom, as vice president and general counsel. In Fairview, Gov. Cox served as a city councilman, mayor, county commissioner and state legislator before being appointed to serve as Utah’s lieutenant governor in 2013. Gov. Cox has spoken out and led out on some of the state’s most daunting challenges including the current coronavirus crisis, homelessness, suicide prevention and bullying. His efforts contributed to Utah’s unprecedented prosperity while fulfilling his constitutional mandate to ensure free and fair elections as the state’s chief election officer. Cox is a vocal advocate for civility in politics, and he’s committed to improving education, strengthening the economy, bolstering Utah’s rural communities, supporting public health, and ensuring opportunity for all Utahns. Gov. Cox and wife Abby are proud parents of four children: Gavin, Kaleb, Adam and EmmaKate. He and his family enjoy spending time in Utah’s amazing backcountry. He also plays the bass guitar with his brother in a local rock band. Host Tribe: Ute Tribe of the Uintah and Ouray ReservationThis year, we are honored to have the Ute Tribe of the Uintah and Ouray Reservation serve as Host Tribe for the 15th Annual Governor's Native American Summit. Come prepared to learn more about the Ute Indian Tribe of Utah as they share their culture through cultural performances, hands on make-and-take crafts, and Tribal spotlight during the morning plenary session. Draft Event Schedule:*Friday, August 6, 2021:7:30 - 8:30 AM: Check-in and walk-up registration  8:30 - 10:30 AM: Morning Plenary Session (adults and youth combined) 10:45 - 11:30 AM: Morning Breakout Session  11:45 am -1:00 PM:  Lunch with cultural presentations 1:00 - 3:45 PM: Afternoon Breakout sessions 4:00 - 5:15 PM: Closing Reception (everyone) *Draft agenda, subject to change.  Parking:Free parking will be available for Summit attendees.  We will provide more information as details are still being finalized.  The Utah Division of Indian Affairs works to promote positive intergovernmental relations and the government to government relationship between the State of Utah and Utah’s American Indian tribes.
