This past week, ten Scouts from Troop 313 chartered by the Church of Scientology Flag Service Organization earned their photography merit badge. A special workshop was set-up for the Scouts to learn about photography and be able to fulfill all of the requirements to earn their merit badge. The workshop was included teaching the Scouts about cameras of different generations, the various sources of lighting and tips on taking beautiful shots. After learning all the theory, Scouts got their hands on cameras and took pictures under the direction of a professional photographer. “Scientology’s founder, L. Ron Hubbard, was the youngest Scout to earn the rank of Eagle in 1924,” said Clemence Chevrot, Community Affairs Director for the Church. “He earned his photography merit badge on his road to Eagle and our Scouts were excited to share Mr. Hubbard’s legacy.” In 1924 Mr. Hubbard led hikes through the Brothers and Buckhorn Wilderness areas from Camp Parsons in the Olympic Peninsula bringing along one of the first point-and-shoot cameras, (the Kodak Brownie Jr.) to photograph areas of the wilderness. The photographs are on display at Camp Parsons and inspired a wilderness photography contest to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Wilderness Act. “Mr. Hubbard has taken thousands of photographs,” said Aiden Eisenman, Scout from Troop 313. “It was nice following his footsteps in earning the same merit badge, knowing he would use this skill repeatedly in his later life.” Merit badges encourage Scouts to explore areas that interest them and to teach them valuable skills in Scoutcraft. In order to earn a badge, Scouts have to meet specific criteria for each skill. Troop 313 is open to youth of any faith, as is any troop of the BSA program. Scouting encourages youth to be faithful and loyal, as laid out in the Scout Oath and Law.
