LONG BEACH, NY — An off-duty lifeguard lept back into action to save a swimmer. Nickoli Alfasi was biking home from the boardwalk Thursday at around 6 p.m. when he spotted someone in distress at the National Boulevard beach, the Long Beach Fire Department posted on Facebook. After alerting the Long Beach police, Alfasi went into the water to rescue the victim. The Long Beach Fire Department's Water Rescue Team was training nearby and was able to assist, the Facebook post said. The young man was treated at the scene and did not require hospitalization, the Long Beach Fire Department said. The City of Long Beach wants to remind people that swimming is prohibited when lifeguards are not on duty. They say the only drowning deaths in the past decade happened when people went in the water without a lifeguard overseeing.
