LEVITTOWN, NY — Ann Mazze was declared dead earlier this year by an employee of the Nassau County Department of Assessment. The only problem was Mazze was very much alive.
Because of the error, the 94-year-old lost property tax exemptions and caused her tax bill to jump thousands of dollars. According to Nassau County Legislator John Ferretti, Mazze was paying up to $800 a month more on her taxes.
Now, Mazze has been reimbursed for the extra expenses on her taxes.
Legislation proposed by Ferretti unanimously passed the county Legislature to restore Mazze's tax deductions and reimburse her for the expenses.
Republicans blamed County Executive Laura Curran and her administration's "broken" assessment process for the error. The county told NBC News that the mistake was due to a clerical error.
"I am glad that after more than six months of stress and frustration, this issue has finally been corrected and Ann was reimbursed," Ferretti said in a statement.
