CHELSEA, NY — A man in his nineties was fatally struck by a driver as he crossed a street in Chelsea last week, police said.
The crash happened around 8:26 a.m. on June 17, as the victim, 91-year-old Jose Calo, was crossing West 25th Street at Eighth Avenue.
As Calo crossed from the northwest to southwest corner of the street, a 60-year-old man driving a Toyota Tundra pickup truck north along Eighth Avenue made a left onto West 25th Street, hitting Calo in the crosswalk, according to a police investigation.
Police responding to a 911 call found Calo unconscious and unresponsive on the street, with trauma to the head. He was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where he died three days later.
The pickup driver stayed at the scene, police said. No charges have been announced against the driver, though an investigation is ongoing.
Calo lived just a few blocks south in Chelsea, just off Eighth Avenue, according to authorities.
