Press release from City of Fort Worth: June 25, 2021 Parklets, which convert curbside parking spaces into active people spaces, have recently popped up in Fort Worth's Near Southside. Last summer, as a response to the pandemic limiting restaurants' indoor seating, the City of Fort Worth announced a pilot parklet/street patio program, which allows restaurants and bars to extend their available outdoor dining. Grand Cru Wine Bar, 1257 W. Magnolia Ave., was the first to jump at the opportunity. Not long after, The Lazy Moose, 1404 W. Magnolia Ave., and Nonna Tata, 1400 W. Magnolia Ave., followed. These fun outdoor spaces add to the ambiance and vibrancy of an already bustling Magnolia Avenue. Fort Worth's Transportation & Public Works Department allows temporary use of on-street parking spaces to increase seating capacity for restaurants and bars. A parklet is a pedestrian space created by building a temporary sidewalk extension within an on-street parking space with amenities such as seating, art and landscaping. Parklets are used to activate pedestrian street activity, and they support economic development by encouraging foot traffic at local businesses. The concept originated in San Francisco in 2005 and has been implemented by cities across the world. Locally, Near Southside Inc. hosts a popular parklet event annually that coincides with international Park(ing) Day in September.     Photo: Patrons of The Lazy Moose enjoy drinks, appetizers and dinner on the breezy street-side patio.     Get articles like this in your inbox.
