Description
Join Down to Earth Artist in Residence, Rik Freeman, for a two-session painting workshop. Following the close of the Winter 2021 Season of Down to Earth, join DC narrative painter Rik Freeman for an in-person, two-session moderate/advanced painting workshop over two consecutive Saturday mornings in July! What you will be doing: Participate in a two-session painting workshop (4 hours in total) led by DC artist, Rik Freeman. This will be a wonderful way to paint outside in your choice of either acrylic, oil, or watercolor with a group and encouragement. Rik will guide participants on painting the natural landscape at the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens. These Down to Earth painting workshops are for moderate to advanced painters. Portable easels will be provided upon request, but painters are encouraged to bring their own. All other paint materials are the sole responsibility of the participant (paint, brushes, cleaning supplies, and any other necessities). If you are not sure you can attend both sessions, then please refrain from registering. When: Session #1 - Saturday, July 10, 2021 from 10:00am - 12:00pm. Session #2 - Saturday, July 17, 2021 from 10:00am -12:00pm. Check-in opens at 9:45am. Summers can be rainy in July. Scheduled rain dates are Saturday, July 24 and Saturday, July 31. Where: Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, 1550 Anacostia Ave Northeast, Washington, DC 20019. Participants will meet by the entrance trail at the parking lot. Getting There: By car, there is a large visitors parking lot at the park entrance on Anacostia Ave and abundant street parking surrounding the park. By Metro, the park entrance is 1 mile from the Deanwood Metro Station and 1.3 miles from the Minnesota Ave Station, both on the Orange Line. By foot or bike, access the park via the Anacostia River Trail. Bring with you: Bring your own paint supplies (paints, brushes, etc). We highly recommend you bring a water bottle, snack, bug spray, sun protection (sunscreen/block, hat, sunglasses), and anything else one may carry when spending time outdoors. ** If you are not fully vaccinated (at least 2+ weeks), then you must wear a mask at all times and/or maintain a 6-foot distance from others. Space is limited for social distancing purposes. There will be no on-site registration.** About the Artist: Rik Freeman is a DC-based, narrative figurative painter. He was born in Athens, Georgia in 1956 and began his professional career as an artist in Washington, DC in 1989. Since then, he has painted numerous murals throughout the area. Those works include: Learn from the Past for the H.D. Woodson High School and Knowledge, commissioned by the DC Public Library for the Dorothy I. Height Library. Two of his most prominent commissions are Shaw Rhymes for the Washington Convention Center and Arl@200 at the Arlington County Courthouse. About Down to Earth: Down to Earth is a creative project partnership among Friends of Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens, Caandor Labs, and Capital Fringe. Together we are shining a light on the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens and the Kenilworth area’s past, present, and future with a sharp focus on the climate emergency and its intersectionality with systemic racism. Through Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall we will journey with the artists as they create their projects; focus community advocacy efforts. We invite you to follow along and participate when we can gather. Down to Earth takes place on the land of the Piscataway people of the Algonquin-speaking tribes, as well as the lands of the Native American people of the greater Anacostia, Potomac and Tidewater regions.
