Come learn about color and queer art as you create a unique artwork that reflects your personal identity! Come learn about color and queer art as you create a unique artwork that reflects your personal identity! This learning opportunity will be led by Long Beach artist and photographer Lucas Gordon in collaboration with The Arts Council for Long Beach and Puente Latino Association. The class is entitled, "The Colors of Pride: Art Through a Queer Lens" and will include 2 lessons that focus on LGBTQIA+ PRIDE. In the first lesson, students will learn about the colors of PRIDE with a focus on the PRIDE flag including what the different colors found in the flag represent to the LGBTQIA+ community. Students will then work with watercolors to learn how to utilize color theory to mix, create, and effectively use a range of hues, tones, tints, and shades. In the second lesson, we'll examine the creation of art as a form of protest that encourages inclusion, visibility, and representation and I will discuss how I've used my art practice as a way to highlight and empower my community. Students will then have the opportunity to create their own original piece of artwork that shows their PRIDE in their unique identity utilizing the Arts Council for Long Beach’s ART KITS. This event will take place on June 26th, at 4:30 pm at Ricardo's Nursery 6850 Atlantic Ave. Long Beach, CA 90805. This event is free and there will be live music at the event. This event is made possible by support from the Port of Long Beach, California Arts Council, Miller Foundation, Los Angeles County Deaprtment of Arts and Culture, and the City of Long Beach. Our purpose is to develop, encourage and enhance the cultural environment in Long Beach. By supporting the artists and arts presenters in our community, together we create cultural opportunities and experiences for the people who live, work and play here.
