MEDFORD, MA — Malden resident Kenjii Barthelemy has been named the director of the Medford Youth Center, which is run by the Mystic Valley YMCA.
Barthelemy grew up in Malden and graduated from the American International College in Springfield, where he majored in sociology and minored in business. It was during a work study program that he realized his passion for working with children and families.
Barthelemy started his career at the MLK Jr Community Center in Springfield and went on to work at the Springfield Boys & Girls Club Family Center, where he was promoted to program leader.
He is no stranger to the YMCA, taking swimming lessons in the old Malden Square building growing up and playing basketball with friends at the current location.
"I'm super excited to work with my staff and the children of the program," Barthelemy said. "I'm excited to grow and be the best that I can be for The Y, and I'm really looking forward to expanding programming and giving more youth opportunities to make friends, learn, grow, but most importantly, play."
Barthelemy will run the Medford Youth Center's summer program.
"We're thrilled to have Kenjii joining our team," Mystic Valley CEO Debbie Amaral said. "Having someone who grew up in the community and who really knows the community - it's needs and how it functions - will be critical to this position, and Kenjii is just that."
