NEW YORK CITY — Patience. That's the uncharacteristic quality New Yorkers have been told to display as they await final results from a pivotal election for the city's next mayor. Oh, and for also the outcomes of an assortment of other local primary races that closed Tuesday. "Again, a little patience, not our strongest suit as New Yorkers," Mayor Bill de Blasio told city dwellers Wednesday. "It's going to take a few weeks to get the final results of this election, but thank you to everyone who participated keeping democracy strong, no matter what's been thrown at us." The city's first foray into ranked-choice voting gave voters the chance to select up to five candidates in order of preference. Counting the first-choice votes in the crowded Democratic mayoral primary proved easy on Election Night — within hours after polls closed, Eric Adams was ahead with roughly 32 percent of those votes. But Adams failed to surpass a 50 percent threshold to win outright. Maya Wiley and Kathryn Garcia, at 22 percent and 19 percent, respectively, are both in striking distance to win in rounds of ranked-choice voting. They need to gain enough second- and third-place votes as the city Board of Elections eliminates the last-place candidate and apportions those votes. "The good part is if you voted, for example, for a mayoral candidate who didn't do so well, your vote continues to stay alive and until it finds a home and has the maximum impact," de Blasio said. So what's the timeline of that process? Here's what the city's Board of Elections had to say. June 22: Here's where we are now. The board released preliminary, unofficial results that reflected only first-rank results on ballots cast in-person during early voting and on Election Day.June 29: This is the next big day. The Board of Elections will release preliminary, unofficial results based on ranked-choice voting tabulations of in-person early voting and Election Day ballots. But, importantly, this will not include any absentee ballots. Absentee ballots must be received by this day to be counted.July 6: The Board of Elections will release an updated tally with absentee ballots.Week of July 12: This is the earliest week the Board of Elections could certify final results, from all ballots and full ranked-choice voting in races. Results could be finalized July 12, but this could be extended by days if there are more rounds of ranked-choice votes to count. Polls are officially closed! Thanks to everyone who voted.
