Description
Sitting Pretty, a boutique home furnishings shop on Elm Street in New Canaan, will be taking a hiatus beginning in August. A large sale is underway with most items being marked down at least 40 percent. “I absolutely love New Canaan,” says Laura, “and I have had the pleasure of meeting so many wonderful people here. I have always had a great love for beautiful interiors and helping people make their homes more aesthetically pleasing. I am planning to take some much-needed time off from the demands of running a shop. I need to rejuvenate and refocus for a few months before getting back to business.” Over the past two years, Laura has persevered through some major challenges. In 2019, shortly after she opened her first store in her hometown of Westport, Laura had a seizure while driving which resulted in a car accident. In the emergency room, Laura was told that she had a previously undiagnosed brain tumor which caused the seizure. 11 days later she had brain surgery and was relieved to know that the tumor was benign. Laura closed her shop for three and a half months while she recovered. After recovering from the surgery, Laura returned to her Westport store and later decided to relocate to New Canaan, when she found an opportunity to be in the charming downtown area on Elm Street. She bravely made the decision to move to New Canaan during the pandemic, as many retail establishments were struggling. “Between the physical challenges of recovering from brain surgery and the economic challenges of the pandemic, these past two years have been an uphill battle,” says Laura. “I have remained steadfast in my business endeavors because of my work ethic. I truly love what I do, and I love my customers. For me, this next chapter represents taking a break – taking some time off before getting back to the beautiful world of interiors.” Much like a gallery curator, Laura sees Sitting Pretty as a way to promote talented artists and designers from around the world. She selected the name “Sitting Pretty” because it symbolizes being in a great place in life; or well-seated. During the hiatus, Laura looks forward to traveling in order to make new discoveries. “I will continue to promote my favorite artists and designers through my social media pages,” says Mason. “I will also keep my clients updated on the development of future business plans for Sitting Pretty.” Sitting Pretty can be found on Facebook and Instagram, where Laura has a strong and loyal following. The New Canaan shop will remain open at 111 Elm Street, Suite 4, through the end of July. The store hours are Wednesday through Saturday from 10:30 am to 4:15 pm.
