Description

Press release from the Waterford Public Library: June 23, 2021 Now in it's 19th year, the eastern CT One Book, One Region initiative provides another timely read for our community.  Join us for a summer long discussion of Interior Chinatown (2020) by Charles Yu.  The virtual kick-off is Thursday, June 24th at 6:30 p.m. with the main speaker being Ayako Takamori, Assistant Professor of East Asian Languages and Culture, Connecticut College.  Please click here to register for this zoom event.   Livestreaming on YouTube is here: https://youtu.be/6rJO4WKsKKg In Interior Chinatown the author posits that we are reading a teleplay about Chinatown — specifically the Golden Palace restaurant, which is the setting for a cop show called "Black and White." Through his protagonist, Willis Wu — who has a small part on the show — Yu explores in devastating (and darkly hilarious) fashion Hollywood's penchant for promoting clichés about Asians and Asian-Americans. Wu has worked his way from "Background Oriental Male" to "Dead Asian Man" to "Generic Asian Man Number Three/Delivery Guy" — a long way from "Kung Fu Guy," which is where he wants to be.  (New York Times, Feb. 28, 2020) "One of the funniest books of the year. . . . A delicious, ambitious Hollywood satire." —The Washington Post Multiple copies of the title are available for checkout at all libraries. The Waterford Library's discussion of this title will be held Monday evening, July 26th at 6:30 p.m.  Thank you for supporting the Waterford Public Library!
