Description

When a disaster strikes, people from the whole community will be impacted by the incident; the whole community can also be actively involved We build disaster resilience by strengthening the community before a crisis, so we are all able to bounce back. There is a saying that the time to exchange business cards is not in the middle of a disaster, but well before. This on-site training is an opportunity to begin a conversation about your community’s disaster planning work or to expand work already in progress. The purpose of the “Whole Community Planning for Disaster” course is to explain why and how government, private sector/business, faith-based and community organizations, non-traditional disaster nonprofits, local associations, and other groups can participate in an inclusive emergency planning process to improve the resilience of a community, and subsequently the nation. The Whole Community Planning for Disaster course provides an in-depth explanation of how a whole community can participate in an inclusive emergency-planning process to improve the resilience of a community and subsequently of the nation. The IAFC encourages host communities to invite traditional emergency-response organizations to participate, as well as local associations, nontraditional disaster nonprofits, businesses, faith-based and community organizations, infrastructure owners and operators, persons with access and functional needs, and any other interested community members. There is a strong emphasis in this course, as part of a community’s disaster-planning process, on engaging people with disabilities and others with access and functional needs in all phases of the disaster continuum. The IAFC encourages host communities to demonstrate an interest in building resilience, a cooperative spirit and an inclusive and involved approach to participant and organizational recruitment for the Whole Community Planning for Disaster course. The International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) represents the leadership of firefighters and emergency responders worldwide; our members are the world's leading experts in firefighting, emergency medical services, terrorism response, hazardous materials spills, natural disasters, search and rescue, and public safety policy.
