Description

Oakland native and jazz saxophonist Nathan Nakadegawa-Lee returns to The Back Room. Born and raised in Oakland, California, saxophonist and composer Nathan Nakadegawa-Lee returns to The Back Room (although outside this time!) with a program of new music written during the lockdown. A graduate of Oakland Technical High School, Nathan grew up playing in OUSD concert and jazz bands, and at sessions around the Bay, where his love for music first began to grow. He has performed at various venues around the Bay Area such as Yoshi’s, Freight & Salvage, The California Jazz Conservatory, The Octopus Literary Salon and The Starry Plough. He currently studies at the New School for Jazz. Band details are forthcoming. A SPECIAL NOTE FROM THE BACK ROOM Thank you for your interest in this show. This show is part of our outdoor concert series, which is very different in atmosphere and logistics from our indoor shows. We did this in October, so we have a bit of experience at this point.  We are now all experiencing the welcome dismantling of the COVID restrictions that we have lived with for so long. I guess we shouldn't be surprised that, even though the indoors once again beckons, the outdoors has not lost its’ fascination to Back Room audiences - and performers. After all, summer is coming! And an indoor show might (depending on a number of factors) means masks, whereas the outdoors is now (maybe, possibly, at your discretion) gloriously mask-free! So, we will continue to feature outdoor music through the summer, and maybe even beyond. We will continue to socially distance our seats, but you may rearrange them to your liking. And those seats will be standard folding chairs - no comfy couches outside, but they will be comfortably shaded. Only 60 tickets will be sold, and we expect all or most of them to be bought in advance. (Reimbursement for cancellation is guaranteed with 24-hour notice, and rain may cause a cancellation from our end). If a show is sold out, you may contact Sam via email for permission to bring your own seats (and be charged at the "door" instead of in advance).  Please keep in mind that late afternoons can be chillier than expected, even on a warm spring day, especially when sitting still, so bring an extra layer! Cups of water will be available, but it might be a good idea to bring your own drinks/snacks. THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING LIVE MUSIC! Tickets are $20. Children under 12 are free. We strongly encourage you to purchase your tickets in advance, which are available at the link below, or you may pay at the door the day of the show. Doors open one half hour before show time. We accept cash only at the door (ATMs are nearby). The Back Room is an all-ages, BYOB (for those 21+) space, dedicated to (mostly) acoustic music of all kinds. You are welcome to bring your own adult beverage with no additional corkage fee. If you need more information or have any questions, please call us: #510-381-1997. Local musician Sam Rudin recently opened a new music venue in downtown Berkeley called The Back Room, which honors his vision to recreate the cozy ambience of the original Freight & Salvage. Rudin describes his new venture as a small space (100 people max), with great acoustics and comfortable seating, that showcases the musicians with respect and appreciation.
