Description

Cultivating Space for BIPOC to Get Dirty, Find Joy, Build Community, Share Stories, Make Friends & Get Outside! Lettuce Meetup/Alegría En La Granja Urban Growers Collective, Advocate for Urban Agriculture, and the Chicago Food Policy Action Council are hosting Lettuce Meetup/Alegría En La Granja. A space for folks that identify as BIPOC only. This event was planned and will be facilitated by members from each of these orgs that identify as BIPOC. We are creating spaces for BIPOC to get dirty, find joy, build community, share stories, make more friends, and be outside! You do not need farm experience to attend this event - in fact we encourage folks that have never worked on a farm before to come! Folks will have the opportunity to get their hands in the soil, soak up all of that rich stuff from the sun, break bread with one another and participate in both the physical and spiritual movement of Bomba. What is Bomba music? Bomba is Afro-Puerto Rican music born from West African slaves in Puerto Rico. Bomba songs and movement have been passed on from generation to generation for the last 400 years. It is music that was born from resistance and spiritual survival. The songs are about lived experiences of love, struggle, anger, sadness, and joy. Bomba movement is a conversation between the dancer and one of the drummers, the dancer is marking steps that explain who they are and the story they want to express. In Chicago, Bomba lives on through the Puerto Rican community, cultural leaders and teachers. Many of the members of Bomba con Buya were born into bomba and have been performing from the time they could walk.
