GREENDALE, WI— The Greendale Schools Board of Education announced an official commendation for a 2021 Greendale High School Graduate and local Eagle Scout for his project in Greendale. Eagle Scout Evan Smazal helped to establish a new outdoor classroom in the forest near Canterbury Elementary School and Greendale Middle School, according to the commendation. Smazal completed the project in August 2020, his commendation said. Smazal put in over 200 hours of work planning the project, sourcing funding, finding supplies, and leading his troop, according to the commendation. The resulting product was a mulched path leading to an outdoor learning space with six new Aldo Leopold benches, the commendation said. The new space is accessed through trails near the playground behind Canterbury Elementary, according to the commendation. Smazal's Eagle Scout project was completed through a partnership with Greendale Schools and the Greendale Schools Forest, and the support of Smazal's Troop 506.
