JERSEY CITY, NJ — If you've taken a ride on the Hudson Ferry, chances are you've seen the Colgate Clock in Jersey City. If you've seen the clock, you might've noticed, it wasn't quite on time. One resident and his son noticed the clock was 12 minutes behind, so they contacted their Ward councilman to see what could be done. Downtown Councilman James Solomon got in touch with the state and had the clock fixed to tell the accurate time. He tweeted about the incident, joking that ferry riders no longer have an excuse to be late anymore (the clock had been 12 minutes behind). Attention Hudson River Ferry Riders: You no longer have an excuse to show up late to anything. Recently, a JC resident & his young son notified us that the Colgate Clock was 12 minutes behind. My office worked with the State to fix this & now the clock is back to normal! pic.twitter.com/dfvYTAMtDb— James Solomon (@SolomonforJC) June 22, 2021 The clock dates back to the 1920s, when it was housed at the old Colgate plant on Hudson Street until the late 1980s. It didn't find its home downtown until the early 2000s — no telling how long it was 12 minutes delayed.
