Man Sentenced In Asbury Park Strangulation

ASBURY PARK, NJ – A Keansburg man was found guilty of Aggravated Assault By Strangulation of a Victim of Domestic Violence on Tuesday after a five-day trial, Acting Monmouth County Prosecutor Lori Linskey announced in a press release Wednesday. On Oct 18, 2019, 35-year-old Jaself Brown was dropping off the victim, who is his fiancée and mother of his son, at his mother's home on Sewell Avenue in Asbury Park. While in the car, Brown and the victim started to argue. Brown then got out of the car, went to the driver's side door, and strangled the victim while sitting in the driver's seat. As other family members intervened to stop the assault, Monmouth County Sheriff's Officer David Lasko, who was on patrol in the area, responded to the scene. Officer Lasko grabbed and struggled with Brown while radioing for assistance. The victim managed to break free and escape through the passenger-side door. Brown continued to struggle with Officer Lasko, eventually getting out the vehicle's passenger-side door during the altercation. Once outside the vehicle, Officer Lasko and Asbury Park Police Officer Robert Champoullion, and other Asbury Park police placed the defendant under arrest. Brown is scheduled to be sentenced on Aug 13 on the Aggravated Assault By Strangulation offense as well as a probation violation. Due to his criminal record, Brown faces up to 10 years in prison.
