Gwinnett to Host Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day in July

Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful and Gwinnett County Department of Water Resources Team Up for Second HHW Event of 2021 on July 22 at Gwinnett County Fairgrounds  Lawrenceville, Ga. – June 23, 2021 – Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful and the Gwinnett County Department of Water Resources will host their second Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day of 2021 on Thursday, July 22. From 4-8 p.m. at Gwinnett County Fairgrounds, the two organizations will accept items that aren’t collected curbside and could prove harmful to the environment like pesticides, antifreeze, spray paint, auto batteries and more for proper disposal or recycling.  “We’re switching things up a bit based on the response from our participants, vendors and team members,” said Schelly Marlatt, Executive Director of Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful. “Ever since the launch of our Household Hazardous Waste Collection Days in 2018, we’ve traditionally hosted these events bright and early on a Saturday morning. To get as much participation as possible this time around, we’re hosting it on a Thursday when many people are getting off work or coming home after picking the kids up from summer camp. We are so proud to work in tandem with other organizations and local businesses for the good of our community and the good of the environment as we connect people and resources for a sustainable Gwinnett. Of course, these Collection Days don’t work without the dedication of our neighbors who not only take the time to collect the items, but also to attend the event. On behalf of Gwinnett County, we appreciate every one of you!”  Not accepted curbside during weekly pickup, the following items will be collected for proper disposal or recycling on July 22: Aerosol/spray pesticidesAutomotive products (engine degreaser, brake fluid, transmission fluid, antifreeze, etc.)Cleaners, corrosives, spot removers, acids and basesAerosol/spray paintAuto batteriesBatteries (household and rechargeable)Chlorinated solventsCooking oil and greaseFire extinguishersFlammables (lighter fluid and waste fuels such as kerosene, gasoline, diesel fuel, etc.)Fluorescent bulbs and ballastsInsecticidesLatex and water-based paintsLawn care productsMercuryMercury salts and elemental mercury thermometersOil based paint and stainsOxidizersPoisonsPropane cylindersSolvents and varnishesThermostats and other mercury containing itemsThinners and paint strippersWeed killerWood preservatives Gwinnett County residents may bring up to five containers of household hazardous waste during this FREE event. Containers may include laundry baskets, storage bins, copy paper boxes or similarly sized receptacles. Please bear in mind that containers will not be returned. As for items that will NOT be collected during the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day, they include (but are not limited to): • Ammunition • Radioactive Waste • Pharmaceuticals • Biomedical/Biohazard Waste. During the last Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day – hosted in February 2021, Gwinnett County collected 111,874 pounds of household hazardous waste for recycling or disposal. Between items collected and the 1,077 cars served, the February Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day marked one of the county’s largest events of its kind to this date.  Marlatt, Gwinnett Clean & Beautiful and the Department of Water Resources hope to top those numbers at the July event. “We’ve had so much participation from the community in the past,” said John Butler, Water Resources Outreach Manager. “It really shows the need for this type of event and the service it provides to the community. People know not to throw certain items in the trash or dump it outside and this event gives folks the outlet they need to properly dispose of or recycle household hazardous waste.
