Description

This talk is a brief introduction to the indigenous Mexican traditions during the postpartum period. On Saturday, July 3 at 1 pm. For an hour, Lucía Echeri, indigenous Purépecha born and raised in Michoacán, Mexico, will share her experience, knowledge, and expertise in Mexican Birth Care Traditions. Lucia, who specializes in the uses of the rebozo and indigenous postpartum care, will be sharing a summary of the best practices of these ancestral traditions. This is not a workshop or a certification to be an expert in this work, it is an introduction for people who want to honor, know and understand in-depth what indigenous traditions are about during the postpartum period. During this session, there will be a short discussion about the uses of the rebozo, and an opportunity to view or purchase these hand-woven pieces after the event. Lucía is an indigenous birthworker, from the mountainous area of Michoacan, Mexico with more than 20 years of experience in traditional healing. She learned postpartum care and the uses of the rebozo throughout her life in Mexico and directly under the traditional healers and textile artisans who weave rebozos on the backstrap loom. Lucía is an activist who is temporarily in Cleveland, but in her home community in Michoacan is creating a healing center for indigenous women where people can go to obtain services for free or at a very low cost. These services are not only centered around the physical body, but also spiritual and mental health, and environmental restoration including reforestation where one of the most important Pillars is the care for the land where these people live. 60% of the money raised in this event will be used to continue construction on the center--as well as for the work that the non-profit Nandi Echeri does in their community. This work includes education through arts for young indigenous boys and girls and is also very focused on the healing and liberation of its indigenous Purépecha people. By attending this event not only will you have the opportunity to learn directly from a person who was born and raised in the indigenous community where these traditions originate, while at the same time you can support the indigenous community, not just an individual, with more than just honor and respect. No type of racism or cultural appropriation is accepted at this event, this work is focused on centering Indigenous, black, and brown communities; though all allies are welcome. As you may know, there are no official certifications of indigenous wisdom that are validated by the keepers of this knowledge, so there is no certification for this session. There is a sliding-scale, suggested donation according to your possibilities of $ 25 to $ 100 or as much as you can, nobody will be denied due to lack of funds. For more information, register via Eventbrite. If you are unable to attend the talk but would like to view the rebozos, you are welcome at 2:30PM. I would like to personally thank Carmen Lane for helping make this happen. The event will be ATNSC..CENTER FOR HEALING AND CREATIVE LEADERSHIP. I know most of us are vaccinated, but at this time masks are required.
