NATICK, MA — When the Natick Mall coronavirus vaccine supersite opened four months ago, just under 320,000 Bay State residents had been fully vaccinated against the virus. Now as the Natick supersite prepares to close on Wednesday, just shy of 4.1 million state residents have been fully vaccinated, achieving the goal set by Gov. Charlie Baker in December. The Natick supersite first opened on Feb. 22 back when only people over age 65 and people with two or more special medical conditions were allowed to get shots. With the growth in vaccinations, demand has dropped and the state has switched to new tactics to inoculate hard-to-reach groups. Baker announced in May that supersites in Natick, Gillette Stadium, the Hynes Convention Center and elsewhere would close by the end of June. Last week, he announced the "Massachusetts VaxMillions" initiative, where five fully vaccinated residents over 18 will win $1 million and five residents between 12 and 17 will win $300,000 scholarships. The Natick Mall site will be open for appointments or walk-in visits through 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
