REDMOND, WA — The Redmond Police Department is urging residents to keep their vehicles locked and avoid leaving valuables behind. The warning comes after police announced Monday that car break-ins are on the rise in the city. "These happen quick and can result in vehicle damage, ID theft and lots of headaches," the department said in a message posted to Facebook. According to Redmond police, parks, trails, gyms, shopping areas, park and ride lots are prime locations for thieves to smash windows and snoop for valuables. A majority of car break-ins and thefts are from unlocked cars, safety experts say. Don't be a victim. Here are some proactive steps you can take to help put the brakes on this crime of opportunity: Always lock the doors to your vehicle — even if you think you're only going to be gone for a few minutes. Secure your car keys. Never leave your keys in the ignition, the glove box, console, etc. Even if the doors to your vehicle stay locked, a thief could break in, locate the keys and drive off with your ride.Park your car in a secure area. Look for well-lit areas that might discourage a thief, and try to park your vehicle where there is plenty of people around. Parking in a remote area makes it easier for a thief to break in without being seen.Never keep valuables in your vehicle. This includes shopping bags from a store you may have just visited. Keep them in the trunk. Easily-spotted valuables can make your vehicle a target for thieves. As always, if you notice anything suspicious in your neighborhood contact the Redmond Police Department. For emergencies, dial 911.
