A Violent Weekend Left Gunshot & Stabbing Victims Police Say

NEW HAVEN, CT —Over the weekend, in addition to two shootings previously reported, a woman was stabbed in connection with a fight on Gibbs Street, an 18-year-old from Bridgeport in a car that fled from cops was found to have been shot, and a church was struck by gunfire, police said. In the case of the stabbing, on Friday night at around 7:30 p.m., a 39-year-old South Carolina woman was taken to the hospital and was treated for a stab wound after police were called to a a fight on Gibbs Street, between Shelton Avenue and the dead end, New Haven police spokesperson officer Scott Shumway said. Later that night, shortly before midnight, Shumway said, police were called for a "suspicious vehicle on Runo Terrace, between Quinnipiac Avenue and the dead end." When officers got there, they found the car which "attempted to flee, but subsequently crashed." Inside, a teen was found to be suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital and was listed in stable condition. At around the same time, police got a Shotspotter alert and 911 calls about gunfire on Goffe Street, between County and Orchard streets. Shumway said police encountered a "crime scene, which included a church in the area that was struck by a single round." He said there's "no evidence at this time that suggests that the church was targeted by the gunfire." As reported, also this past weekend, a 41-year-old West Haven man was shot on George Street, between Waverly and Day streets on Friday night, police said. And, Saturday, in the pre-dawn hours, a 14-year-old from New Haven was shot on Orchard Street, between George and Chapel streets, police said. Both suffered non-life threatening gunshot wounds.
