County Nears 50% Vaccination, Health Metrics Hit Record Lows

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — Around 43 percent of Prince George's County residents are fully inoculated. About 49 percent have gotten at least one dose of the coronavirus vaccine. Seventy-three percent of Maryland adults have gotten at least one shot. The percent positivity has dipped to its best mark ever. And the hospitalization count has fallen to a record low. Last week's 74 cases are up 68 from the week prior. This is the first week since March 2020 that Prince George's tallied less than 100 new infections in a week. This is the fifth straight week that the county recorded less than 500 new cases, an achievement that was elusive since April 2020. It was also the eighth straight week that Prince George's posted less than 1,000 new infections. Before this stretch, the county hadn't accomplished the feat since late last October. The virus also killed five county residents last week, which is one fewer than the week before, the Maryland Department of Health said. Here's a look at where the numbers stand in Prince George's County. Full Vaccinations Currently: 42.82 percentTrend: Up by 1.51 percentage pointsRank: 15th out of the state's 24 jurisdictionsTrend: No changeComments: New full immunizations dropped slightly last week and fell short of the record high, set six weeks ago. New full inoculations have decreased in five of the last six weeks. Prince George's had the lowest vaccination rate in Maryland until April 26. At Least One Dose Currently: 48.96 percentTrend: Up by 0.9 percentage points This is the percentage of residents who have gotten at least one dose of the inoculation. The Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines both require two shots. The Johnson & Johnson immunization only has one injection. Coronavirus Case Rate Currently: 1.16Trend: Down by 1.07Comments: The case rate fell for the tenth straight week. Before that, infections were on a four-week hike.
