FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — A 20-person Redistricting Advisory Committee was appointed Tuesday by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors for the redrawing of the county's magisterial districts. The process will determine electoral districts for the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and School Board. The redistricting process happens once every decade to ensure Fairfax County residents are fairly represented in county government. Redistricting is required by law after the U.S. Census every 10 years. "Redistricting must be done fairly and in a way that ensures transparency and fair representation of the diversity of Fairfax County," said Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Jeffrey McKay in a statement. "This is a community-led process, and I am confident the committee will develop fair and equal districts and everyone will have the same access to representation." U.S. Census data from 2020 is expected in mid-August, allowing committee members to update district maps. The committee is meeting from Aug. 30 to Sept. 17, later than past committees due to the delay in U.S. Census data. The committee is made up of representatives for the nine existing Board of Supervisors districts; at-large representatives for the county; representatives from the African-American, Hispanic, Asian/Pacific Islander community and Arab-American communities; and representatives from the Federation of Citizens Associations, League of Women Voters, Northern Virginia Chamber of Commerce and Northern Virginia Labor Federation.
