LUSBY, MD — A father-son duo caught and killed an American alligator near the Chesapeake Bay on Sunday, WUSA9 reported. Journalists Bruce Leshan and Laura Wainman noted the family spotted the 7.5-foot gator weeks earlier while kayaking on a Lusby pond, just off the bay in Calvert County. WUSA9 explained William Adams and his son, 14-year-old Jake Adams, fled but soon worried about the town's safety. The Adams' returned to the southern Maryland pond on Father's Day and found the alligator in the weeds, the TV station added. The father and son then shot the female gator with a crossbow, the news outlet said. American alligators are not indigenous to Maryland. The creatures typically inhabit the coasts of the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean, the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory wrote. They rarely come past North Carolina, the University of Georgia research team said. William Adams told WUSA9 that he thinks the gator was a freed or escaped pet.
