Motorists Can Expect Delays At Quincy Ave. And Gun Club Road Into Tuesday Morning In Arapahoe County

Press release from the Arapahoe County Government: June 18, 2021 Motorists are encouraged to avoid the intersection at Quincy Ave. and Gun Club Road on Monday night and early Tuesday morning as workers construct the final phases of the new partial continuous flow intersection. Once the traffic signal switch is complete, which is anticipated by Tuesday morning, motorists will encounter a new configuration at Quincy Ave. and Gun Club Road with the completion of a partial continuous flow intersection - (PCFI). The work at the intersection is a $12 million project funded by Arapahoe County, City of Aurora and federal highway money. The traffic signal switch will start at 8 p.m. Monday and is expected to be completed by 5:30 a.m. Tuesday. During these work hours, motorists traveling in the area may encounter significant delays as workers install mast arms over the intersection. While the mast arms are installed, traffic will be stopped in all directions for approximately 10 minutes. This is scheduled to happen four times during these work hours. The work will also include signal activation and removal of the existing span wire signal. Left turn movements will be restricted through the night. With the completion of the traffic signal switch, motorists traveling north and south on Gun Club Road and are planning to turn left on Quincy Avenue will be directed to stay left and utilize new left turn crossover lanes. The PCFI design was selected because of its efficiency in reducing delays and travel times for busy intersections like Quincy Avenue and Gun Club Road. These intersections are primarily different in the turn lane layouts. The new left turn crossover lanes were constructed for both northbound and southbound Gun Club Road. Drivers will enter the left turn lane approximately 1,000 feet before reaching the intersection. Separating the left turn lane reduces wait times and allows more drivers to pass both straight and left through the intersection during each green light. Similarly, bypass right turn lanes were added in all directions, allowing drivers to merge with flowing traffic without stopping at a light. The project also includes new E-470 on/off ramps, where a new signal has been placed south of the intersection. All these improvements are intended carry much heavier traffic volumes through this entire area, which is close to E-470, Aurora Reservoir and Arapahoe County Fairgrounds. Work on this project started in late 2019 and the final phase started this past April.
