Former RI DEM Director Lands New Job, With Familiar Boss

PROVIDENCE, RI — After stepping down as the director of the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, Janet Coit is headed to the national stage. There, she'll be under the management of a recently departed colleague: Gina Raimondo, who stepped down as Rhode Island governor after she was nominated to serve as the national Commerce Secretary. Coit announced she would be stepping down from DEM after 10 years as director earlier this month. Her last day was Friday. On Monday, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced Coit was selected to lead NOAA Fisheries as the assistant administrator. The agency manages the country's fisheries and works on conservation efforts for protected marine species. Coit will also serve as the acting assistant secretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and deputy NOAA administrator. Her appointment for both positions take effect immediately. NOAA is under the umbrella of the national Commerce Department, helmed by Sec. Raimondo. "Janet understands the direct link between natural resources management and economic vitality for our Nation," Raimondo said. "She is a tremendous addition to our NOAA team, who brings a wealth of experience in supporting fisheries, promoting the seafood sector, protecting the marine environment, and tackling climate change."
