(Broadview, IL) – If some Village of Broadview residents are thinking of hosting their own fireworks display at home leading up to the 4th of July celebration, the village's mayor has a simple message for holiday revelers: don't do it.
At the Broadview Board of Trustees' June 21 meeting, Mayor Katrina Thompson issued a gentle
warning to fireworks enthusiasts, reminding residents that setting off fireworks from home is prohibited by a village ordinance, and violators risk a $750 fine.
"I do want to remind the community that we do have an ordinance that relates to fireworks, and that it is illegal to shoot off fireworks from a private home," said Thompson at the end of the board's bi-monthly meeting. "I have advised the Fire Department that when we get calls on a certain house, that we go to knock on the door to remind a resident about the fireworks ordinance, but if we have to go back to the resident and you are still popping fireworks, we will issue a citation, and a citation starts at $750."
Thompson wants residents to "enjoy" the 4th of July but wants the celebration to be "safe and respectful.
"We want you to be able to enjoy the festivities surrounding the 4th of July and to celebrate with fireworks, but we need it to be done in a safe and respectful manner," said Thompson. "We have a lot of seniors in the community who are very afraid of the fireworks that are going off, and we have a lot of pets that experience a lot of anxiety over the fireworks."
To welcome July 4th 2021, Thompson urges Broadview residents to attend authorized, supervised fireworks displays that are held in open, large public spaces "out of consideration for your neighbors."
