The victims were scammed by schemes that used Western Union to transfer funds . How did the scam work? Scammers contacted people and promised prizes, loans, jobs, discounted products that were not real ,in exchange for money upfront. They also pretended to be family members in need of cash, or law enforcement officers demanding payment, such as in the grandparent scam. The scammers told people to send money through Western Union. Because of joint investigations by the Federal Trade Commission : Department of Justice (DOJ), and the U. S. Postal Inspection Service, Western Union agreed to pay a $586 million fine and admitted to aiding and abetting the scammers through wire fraud. The Dept. of Justice used that money to provide refunds to people. Update February 5, 2021. DOJ in conjunction with USPIS and the Remission Administrator continues to review Petitions for Remission and Reconsideration Request forms from potential victims of the Western Union fraud.
