Congratulations to the boys’ high school lacrosse programs across Long Island for an exciting season. In the wake of the pandemic, the programs at Nassau and Suffolk high schools rebounded and delivered thrilling end-of-season championship games. In Nassau, the county championship winners were Syosset, Garden City, Manhasset and Friends Academy. James C. Metzger and The Whitmore Agency presented annual leadership awards to eight outstanding lacrosse players on the competing teams at levels A, B, C and D: Ben Bruno of Cold Spring Harbor High SchoolJames Costello of Garden City High SchoolJoey Davis of Syosset High SchoolDavid Ford of Oyster Bay High SchoolColin Kuester of Manhasset High SchoolChristian Lembo of Farmingdale high SchoolAnthony Lucsczynski of H. Frank Carey High School (Franklin Square)Albert Paniccia of Friends Academy (Locust Valley) Each award recipient reflects the tenacity, honesty, commitment and positive attitude required in Nassau lacrosse. Each player also possesses the ability to inspire others on and off the field. In addition to the leadership presentations, Metzger provided the funding for the most valuable player awards presented at the Nassau championship games. Changes in scheduling due to the pandemic prevented the presentation of leadership awards for student-athletes from Suffolk County. These awards are anticipated to be reinstated for the 2022 season. Long Island Championship MVPs Following the county championship games, exciting matches between Nassau and Suffolk were held at the Long Island Championship. This year, due to altered logistics that addressed issues related to the pandemic, the games were held at the East Islip School District Sports Complex in Suffolk. Nassau County and Long Island Championship games are expected to return to Hofstra University’s James H. Shuart Stadium beginning next year. Nassau won two games and Suffolk won two games. Four outstanding players received the James C. Metzger Most Valuable Player Award: Level A – Northport beat Syosset 11-10. Senior Northport faceoff specialist Tyler Kuprianchik was MVP. Level B -- Garden City beat Comsewogue 5-1. Senior goalie Drew Quinn won MVP. Level C – Mt. Sinai defeated Manhasset 14-13. Junior attackman Joey Spallina won the MVP Award. Level D – Friends Academy bested Port Jefferson 15-14 in double OT. Senior midfielder Albert Paniccia, who won the Nassau County lacrosse leadership award, was MVP. “All great games played by fantastic competitors,” said Metzger, a 1970s high school (Half Hollow Hills East of Dix Hills) and college (Hofstra University) lacrosse standout and now a lacrosse benefactor. “My congratulations to all players, coaches and team personnel, parents, team boosters and school officials.” _______ Photo: Recipients of the James C.
