Annual auction to support the Historical Society of Cheshire County Great news! The Auction of Historic Proportions will be held in person again this year at the Historical Society of Cheshire County on Friday, September 24 at 5 pm. We are very excited about being able to see our friends again at the Society (and elsewhere in the community) and have a good time while raising money for our programs. In the interest of safety, we are limiting the number of tickets to half as many as we would normally sell for this, our signature fundraising event. We have already received about 75 wonderful donation of items for this year’s event; for example, a two-night stay at the Mended Oar Outpost, a very isolated waterside retreat on Chandler Meadow in Stoddard; a horse-drawn sleigh or wagon ride; a first-edition copy of Ernest Hebert’s eighth novel in his Darby series, Whirlybird Island, and the other seven novels in the series; and deluxe trips to the Greek Islands, Tuscany, Sedona, New Orleans, Key West, Alaska, Iceland, the castles of Ireland, and the French wine country. New this year for people who attend the auction in person will be a selection of over twenty gift baskets in various themes. A children’s-book-themed basket contains ten classic children’s books donated by Toadstool Bookstore. A margaritas-themed basket includes fixings for margaritas and a special overnight stay at the Hancock Inn that comes with their signature margarita. A golf-themed basket comes with rounds of golf at Keene Country Club, Bretwood Golf Course, and Eastman Golf Links. Other themes are dog care, spa and wellness, gardening, foodie, automotive, baking, …. you get the idea. There will be a raffle drawing for a framed original oil painting of Mount Monadnock as seen from Monadnock Berries, by Keene artist Gary Custer. The Twentieth Century Pops will play their classic style of swing tunes. Brandt Onorato from Moggie’s Auction Services will be the auctioneer. Marsha Dubois of Kristin’s Bistro and Bakery will provide delicious hos d’oeuvres. As always, there will be numerous diversions and laughs throughout the evening. The Historical Society of Cheshire County provides 160 programs per year to make history come alive for people of all ages. The Historical Society of Cheshire County headquarters are located at 246 Main Street in Keene, New Hampshire, as well as the Wyman Tavern period house museum, built in 1762.
