SWAMPSCOTT, MA — A Swampscott girls soccer team earned a little sweet revenge on its way to the Essex County Youth Soccer Association championship this spring.
The Swampscott eighth-grade girls town team, made of seventh- and eighth-graders, persevered through a strange season that began with players social distancing and wearing masks, and "ended with smiles, cheers and hugs."
The team went 5-1-2 in the regular season with the lone loss coming to Pentucket.
In the first playoff game against Saugus, the squad used strong defense, team play and a fast-break goal to secure a 1-0 victory.
That set up a championship game against Pentucket.
Playing in sweltering conditions, the team "pulled together and played a fantastic game," closing out a 2-1 win for the title.
"What a great accomplishment in a difficult year — with teamwork, perseverance and support for each other," the coaching staff told Patch. "The girls made the town proud this season."
