Description

Forest management has certainly changed on Grand Mesa since the Surface Creek Valley settlers first got here. When the first settlers came to the Surface Creek Valley there was no forest management policy in place. Timber, fishing, and water management decisions had not been made, and cattle overgrazed the mountain to a dangerous level. Our speaker, Clay Speas, began work with the Forest Service in 1988 and retired earlier this year after 19-years with the GMUG. Most recently he served as GMUG's Renewable Resources Officer and supervised timber, range, watershed, ecology, and wildlife and fish.
