Description
Aloha, Last Thursday I went out to the Hawaii Kai Men's Shed sausage sizzle by TheBus using the 1L. When I got to the Hawaii Kai Retirement Community (HKRC) I was picked up by a golf cart driver and driven to the gathering at the end of a road where there was a small garage type building with a door. In front were chairs and a few men siting and eating. A BBQ was going and there was a large table inside the building with more folks and all the food. A variety of beer was in a fridge. I had two hamburgers a longboard beer, macaroni salad and a cookie. I spoke with Glenn and Russ. I learned that the shed was needing rejuvenation. Hardly anyone was there and the man who used to use it left the HKRC. There were power tools but not many and the place needs organization and attention; pegboard, a fan, a coat of white paint inside and an outside covered structure. The tools are not currently being used. So this is a good opportunity for folks in the area to work with the HKRC and get this place working properly. There were at least three folks from the big shed at pier 20. They were there helping to get this one functioning. I spoke with them and learned that’s where it would be best for me as I am in Manoa. There was also staff from the HKRC who provided the food and helped with the serving. There were also a few women. There is potential. There is no restroom at the site but you can take a golf cart to a nearby HKRC building to use one there. The place has privacy and remoteness and must be seen to appreciate; 40 acres. It does need people; those with new ideas would be welcome. Men need time with other men. Because it is not currently functioning, a small group could run it however they like. Mahalo, Thomas SENIOR MEN Come visit the Hawaii Kai Men's Shed sausage sizzle (Australian term) on June 17th. Hamburgers, hot dogs and beer at the Shed. Men's Sheds are for senior men. We have a small woodworking shop where you can fix things, do community projects or just talk story. Come and make some new friends. Get out from under foot for a while. Have some fun. Sheds started twenty five years ago in Australia (1,300 Sheds) then moved to Ireland (450 Sheds), UK (500 Sheds) and the US (21Sheds). The first US Shed started here in Hawaii.
