Blacks came to Chicago continuously as a result of racism in the South, lack of equal opportunity, and the desire for education and employment. During the Great Migration, the largest number of African Americans in Chicago settled between 18th street on the North and 51st Street on the South, and State Street on the West and Cottage Grove on the East.  The Bronzeville /Black Chicagoan Historical Society was founded in 1999 by a small group of enthusiastic African American history researchers. It was chartered as an Illinois not-for-profit educational and historical preservation organization in 1999. 501 c 3 status was granted in 2002.
