Description

The North Carolina Poor People’s Campaign Brings Juneteenth to the Triangle.  CHAPEL HILL, NC - On June 26, 2021 The Cultural Arts Committee of the North Carolina branch of the Poor People’s Campaign National movement will be hosting its inaugural event,  ‘The Cookout’: A Celebration of Juneteenth.  In AAVE ‘The Cookout’ refers to the historical tradition of gathering to celebrate, even in the face of constant challenges. Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the true ending of slavery in the United States. Taking root in Galveston, Texas in 1865 Juneteenth is recognized as African American Emancipation Day and has spread across the United States and beyond. On June 26, 2021 at The Unity Center of Peace, the NC PPC Cultural Arts Committee will commemorate African American freedom, excellence, education, and achievement. By honoring the historical legacy of the holiday; we will join in reassuring each other, fellowshipping, gathering with our collective North Carolina ‘family’ and celebrating the lives and achievements of those who have come before us. The event will be held at The Unity Center of Peace located at 8800 Seawell School Road in Chapel Hill, North Carolina 27514 from 11:00 AM – 4:00 PM. The event will include special presentations about the history of Juneteenth, food trucks, face painting, a pop-up market, professional wrestling and more. It is our hope that by sharing the knowledge of our actual history and the hope and jubilation of Juneteenth we will start to Heal some on the deep divides that plague us. We invite you to join us June 26, 2021 at The Unity Center of Peace from 11:00 AM – 4:00 PM to rejoice in Juneteenth and fellowship with us! Forward Together! Not One Step Back! In service and solidarity, The NC PPC Cultural Arts Committee 🎨
