Description

Learn and assemble a gorgeous leather codex, perfect for journaling, note-taking, and more! The codex is a powerfully minimalistic binding style and is one of the first book forms that we might recognize as an actual book. In conjunction with the transition from papyrus to parchment, the codex quickly replaced the scroll as the go-to book form in Egypt. Today, we can enjoy creating codices with a variety of materials, and in this workshop, students will learn how to cut out the cover of their codex from suede leather, fold signatures and endsheets, and use a longstitch binding method to assemble their book! Perfect for beginning and experienced bookbinders alike, students will take home a stunning leather journal of approximately 80 pages. This is a beautiful tool for dreamers, schemers, and everyone in between! ________________________________________________________________________________________________ This class features the Digital Publication Workshop add-on, which takes place on Saturday, July 10th, from 10AM-2PM. In this optional add-on, students are required to bring a digital manuscript intended for use with the main bookbinding workshop. Please bring a thumb drive with the file or email it to [email protected] (.doc, .docx, .rtf preferred). Students will learn how to import a digital manuscript, format an interior book design, and print and prepare their text block for bookbinding in the main workshop. They will be able to take all digital files generated, and two physical copies of their manuscript will be stored in the shop for use in the main bookbinding workshop. This class also features the Custom Text Block add-on. Students may purchase this add-on if they wish to have a digital manuscript formatted and printed by SPPC staff for use in the main bookbinding workshop. Please email your digital manuscript (.doc, .docx, .rtf preferred) to [email protected] no later than ONE WEEK PRIOR to the main workshop. ________________________________________________________________________________________________ This class is taught by Dorian Karahalios. Dorian is a writer, editor, book designer, and crafter who was one of the founding owner-members of SPPC. Dorian's bookbinding work focuses on a fusion of digital and analog techniques intended to bring hand-bound elements to more production-focused goals—in other words, more beautiful books in more hands. SPPC is an immersive learning space dedicated to print, publishing, and creative play. We provide access to equipment, resources, and expertise to empower our students to execute their own print, book, writing, fabrication, and printing projects.
