PORT JEFFERSON STATION, NY —Suffolk County police have identified a man who died from stab wounds in Port Jefferson Station on Thursday. Police said Benjamin Flores-Mendez, 39, of Port Jefferson Station is the man who was found on the Greenway Trail, near Clifton Avenue, just before 1 a.m. Det. Lt. Kevin Beyrer told Newsday he was found by officers responding to a 911 call, and they, as well as a crew of paramedics from the Terryville Fire Department, attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Flores-Mendez could not be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene, he said. The trail, which runs from Port Jefferson Station to Setauket, is used by hikers and bicyclists. Charles McAteer, of Friends of the Greenway, told Patch the group "continues to advocate for safety" on the trail, as well as "in the streets of our communities." "The trail is only officially open dawn to dusk and we encourage people to use the buddy system when utilizing any pathway," he said. "We appreciate the quick response by SCPD and their ongoing investigation in this matter."
