Juneteenth is a day to not only reflect on black life and experience, but also to celebrate freedom and acknowledge the perseverance of African Americans.
Juneteenth commemorates the anniversary of the day, June 19, 1865, that Gen. Gordon Granger of the Union Army shared the news with formerly enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, that they were in fact free and that the Civil War had ended.
This year marks the first time Juneteenth will be celebrated as an official holiday across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
Join Arlington's Human Rights Commission, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Director Jillian Harvey and others for a special ceremony to celebrate Juneteenth at Town Hall Plaza, 730 Mass. Ave., at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, June 19.
The event is estimated to last 30 minutes. Speakers include:
Senator Cindy Friedman, (D) Fourth Middlesex;
Representative, Dave Rogers (D) 24th Middlesex;
Mikel Satcher, MLK Observance Committee, former pastor of Trinity Baptist Church;
Naoka Carey, Arlington Human Rights Commissioner; and
Harvey.
