Dallas' Nasher Sculpture Center Makes Their Fans A 'Mixtape'

DALLAS, TX —Back in the days before digital ruled the world, if you wanted to create intimacy with someone, you made them a mixtape. It'd be something of an audio collage of songs, spoken word and sounds you curated personally to illustrate the connection you felt to someone. The Nasher Sculpture Center is currently paying homage to that concept with an exhibition that runs through Sept. 26, and of course it's called "Nasher Mixtape." In this instance, of course, the iconography leans on sculpture rather than auditory signifiers. The presentations include audience favorites and more recent acquisitions to form a visual tour designed to be accessible and immediate. According to the venue, it's a loosely interlaced collection of works that draws deeply from the Nasher's permanent pieces as well. At the same time, there are numerous works making their first appearance — fully a third of what's on display, in fact. Other pieces have not been on public view in recent memory. Highlighted among the "Mixtape" exhibition pieces are new additions, including works from Melvin Edwards, Nicole Eisenman, Maren Hassinger and Judy Chicago. In keeping with the theme of diversity that a mixtape implies, the assortment curated here is also more inclusive of artists of color and female artists and their perspective.
