COLUMBUS, OH — The Ohio Senate passed legislation this week that would legalize sports betting statewide. Senate Bill 176 will now head to the Ohio House for debate and consideration. Should it be approved there, and by Gov. Mike DeWine, sports gambling could be legal in Ohio by 2022. "This bill will spur economic opportunities for businesses in Ohio," said state Sen. Niraj Antani, one of the sponsors of the bill. "Ohioans want legalized sports betting, and this bill will provide that with a safe expansion of gaming in our state." Here's what you need to know about the possibility of legal sports betting in Ohio: Who would be able to gamble on sports? Sports betting would be legal for Ohioans 21 and older. What could I gamble on? Ohioans could bet on professional sports, college sports, Olympic or international sports, motor races, horse races, E-sports, or any other special event approved by the Ohio Casino Control Commission, which would oversee the industry. Betting on high school or grade school sports would be illegal. Betting on any events involving someone under the age of 18 would also be prohibited. Where could I gamble? Sports betting would be available online, at brick-and-mortar sportsbooks, and in restaurants and bars with liquor licenses via betting kiosks. What is Ohio's cut of sports bets? The state will impose a 10 percent tax on net revenue from sports betting. Proceeds would be directed to a K-12 education fund. Would the legislation change anything else?
