METRO DETROIT — Two highway shootings across Metro Detroit late Thursday injured three people and killed a 2-year-old child, Michigan State Police said.
Two children were shot while in a vehicle traveling on I-75, near McNichols Road, around 10 p.m. Thursday. One of them, a 2-year-old, was killed, police said. The other, a 9-year-old, was transported to a local hospital and was last listed in serious condition, according to police.
Two people also were hospitalized following a shooting on M-39, near Plymouth, which occurred a little before midnight, police said. In that shooting, a person driving a vehicle was shot through the shoulder and a rear seat passenger was shot in the knee.
Lt. Mike Shaw with the Michigan State Police told Patch Friday morning that the shootings are not related.
Police said a preliminary investigation of the I-75 shooting showed that a driver entered south I-75 from 7 Mile Road in Detroit when a light-colored, four-door passenger vehicle pulled alongside them.
Someone from that vehicle opened fire, police said.
Similar circumstances surrounded the second shooting, in which a vehicle was traveling south on M-39 when a vehicle pulled alongside it and opened fire, police said.
Anyone with information on either shooting has been asked by police to contact MSP at (734) 287-5000.
