Join us on the 2nd Wednesday of every other month for a wine tasting featuring a new wine at each event. Bring in your favorite bottle! It is true! The Grapevine Wine Tasting evenings at the Berkeley City Club are back. The tastings will return to the second Wednesday of every other month. The inaugural tasting after the long shut down will be July 14 at 7pm at the Berkeley City Club. The meeting after that will be on September 8, 2021. Margaret and Emmett Eiland, who for years have organized the tastings, are easing into retirement. They plan to attend the tastings but have asked Kate and Richard West to handle the logistical and organizational details. The tastings will follow the same format as in past years. Each person (not each couple) will bring a bottle of the featured wine to the tastings. Wine glasses, tableware, bread, cheese, and wine tasting sheets will be provided by the Club in exchange for a fee of $20 for members and $25 for non-members. Attendees will be seated at tables of five to six people. You are welcome to specify if you wish to sit with friends. In most cases those requests can be accommodated. For our tasting on July 14 we will taste Zinfandels. Zinfandel is an easy re-entry into the wine tasting world. There are lot of wineries that make Zinfandel at all price ranges, with retailers from Safeway, Trader Joe’s and every local wine store having selections. It is also an exclusive California wine. Some will say that Zinfandel’s roots to European vines is clear. Others are not so sure. The discussion about the European heritage of Zinfandel is best debated after consuming some. Zinfandel can be made in styles ranging from rose to fortified (port). For our tasting on the 14th, let’s stick to the red table wine versions. Fortunately this is the most common style of Zinfandel made. So, find a Zinfandel to your liking, make a reservation through Eventbrite and be prepared to have a good time on July 14.
