Dive into all things nature and join us at Illiniwek Forest Preserve for a weekend to remember! Celebrate biodiversity at the 6th annual BioBlitz, held at Illiniwek Forest Preserve from 2 p.m. on June 25 to 2 p.m. on June 26. A BioBlitz is an intensive survey of as many species as possible within a specified area during a 24-hour period. This is a rare opportunity to join over 40 scientists and naturalists from around the region as they survey mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, plants, insects, and much more! Make sure to check out the booths at base camp on Saturday, June 26th from 10:00am-2:00pm! Several groups, including Nahant Marsh, Niabi Zoo, US Fish and Wildlife Service, Guardians of the Prairie and Forest, and more will have interactive booths for all ages to enjoy! Nahant Marsh is a 305-acre nature preserve nestled in southwest Davenport. The largest urban wetland on the upper Mississippi River, it is part of a 513-acre wetland complex and stopover site for many migrating waterfowl and songbird species. This unique preserve is comprised of several habitats including, marshes, open water, vernal ponds, tallgrass prairie, sand prairie, and bottomland woods. Nahant has three miles of hiking trails and boardwalks; a bird blind, dock, and raised platforms for wildlife viewing and photography; two shelters for picnicking; and an education center that offers various programs, education animals, and interpretation of the site. The Nahant Marsh Education Center is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to Noon (extended to 3 p.m. April-October).
